Don’t let that accent over the “e” fool you. We aaaaaalll know what this video by Jesse Rosten is about, and it’s pretty freaking hilarious, if only because it’s so spot-on rendolent of the kind of faux-scientific jargon that beauty product ads blow out their asses on the daily. Why can’t you be perfect? Because [...]
via Hypebeast: “Probably best known for his neon light sculptures and skate decks emblazoned with witty, hip-hop inspired statements – Patrick Martinez has been a busy man lately. In addition to unveiling a window installation at Factory 413 on Fairfax, he has also once again transitioned into the realm of film. His latest short piece, [...]
The Nowness recently celebrated the 100th birthday of blues legend Robert Johnson by producing this rather grim yet charming animated short that focuses on legends surrounding Johnson’s nomadic lifestyle. Legendary producer Steve Berkowitz also compiled a list of his top-ten favorite blues musicians from Johnson’s era. Click here to watch and learn. -christina
Prolific photojournalist, documentarian of early street art, and all-around smart lady Martha Cooper talks about her section of the Art in the Streets exhibit at the MOCA in Los Angeles, in this great short video from the street art blog VNA. The show is certainly a spectacle, but many critics cite the lack of informational [...]
Butterflies feat. John Malkovich from Gentleman Scholar on Vimeo. “I have this idea in my mind for a painting about butterflies. Blue and green and yellow butterflies, tumbling out of my brain. I think it’s going to be good. I feel like I can almost touch them… like they’re right there for me to grab [...]
“I guess it was punk TV. We were anti-technique, anti-format, anti-establishment, and anti-anti-establishment. We liked to break all the rules of good broadcasting. Sometimes we would sit around and say, “Well, what should we do now?” Sometimes we sat there and did nothing. They say “dead air” is the kiss of death in broadcasting, but [...]
This makes me happier than almost getting mowed down by a 15 year old girl who’s reading and skateboarding at the same time (which… happened). In a union of two different spheres of nerdom, The Exploratorium in SF is currently hosting an exhibition on the physics of skateboarding, inviting several DLX riders to demonstrate on [...]
Cass McCombs is my absolute favorite musical discovery of the past 5 years. This video for the first single from his forthcoming WITS END ep – assembled from VHS clips - is sublime, abject, nostalgic, and NSFW all at once. WITS END is out April 26th from Domino Records. Watch it here (V Magazine) -christina
The Nowness just released this exclusive preview for a new documentary about one of the most exciting times in music/ art/ film/ your mama, featuring a million of my favorite actors in just a few short minutes. Click here to watch. -christina “Focusing on the mid-70s and 80s No Wave movement in New York, Danhier’s [...]
Because video lookbooks are now the norm, and society is still divided into the cool kids and the lewsers (my spelling, feel free to pass it on) filmmaker Cass Bird made this short film for Sophomore. Featuring Jen Brill, Lesley Arfin, Chlöe Sevigny, Scott Campbell, and several other purveyors of cultural cache engaging in a [...]
via HypeBeast: “Stolen Girlfriends Club presents their latest collection, “Untitled”, in the most unanticipated manner. Gone are the runways, front row seating, backstage and media-only invite list. For six minutes New World Supermarket at Victoria Park was taken over by twenty models treating each aisle as a catwalk and the public were the inadvertent guests [...]
Folks over at Dossier turned me onto this new video by talented, bad-ass photographer Magdalena Wosinska. Enjoy. -christina “As the weather gets warmer and your brain begins to thaw, thoughts of setting out on the road slowly creep back in, or at least they do for me. Heres a new video from our friend Magda [...]
Okay, enough fashion stuff. Onto more important things, like dicking around and getting paid. Everyone’s favorite ol’ sloppy-chinned barney (or maybe just mine) Gavin McInnes, is doing sketch comedy for Off The Wall TV. A shredder he is not, but comedy seems a promising field for him. Check it out. FYI, if this makes you [...]
I know you act like you’re down with basketball, so here’s a primer on what that dude at work has been talking about for the past week. All kidding aside, this video is pretty great. Hearing athletes speak makes me go “bless your heart” inside. -christina
LA-based independent record label Hit City USA has just released a video for the newest addition to their roster, Princeton. “To the Alps” is everything sunny and louche about socal without being precious, and watching these roller-dancers (is that what they’re called?) is pretty mesmerizing…especially the dude who may or may not be Bill Murray. [...]
There’s been talk of the making of this documentary for years, and now it finally has some preliminary screenings in New York. I’ve been splurging on the Sunday NY Times since I was a teenager, just for a glimpse of photographer Bill Cunningham’s long running “Sunday Styles” column. The trailer alone betrays the absolute sweetness [...]
via Juxtapoz: “Fab 5 Freddy was telling us about how he and LEE painted all the background and floor pieces, and Jean-Michel Basquiat came in and finished off the wall with various writings. Amazing time. Historical time. Legendary graffiti times. The song itself was from the 1979 album Eat to the Beat. A good way [...]
via Hypebeast: ”This past weekend saw the launch of Monocle’s TV show, available on financial and business broadcaster Bloomberg. Continuing to present current affairs, the TV show acts as an extension to the various formats already produced by the Monocle team. A new episode has been released each day from January 29, making three in [...]
I have a secret love for freestyle skating, and Spanish dreamboat Kilian Martin breaks it down Gene Kelly style in this possibly cheesy, but gorgeous video for Man About Town. Watch it here and swoon… -christina
I love the sleek, spooky video for Thierry Mugler’s new menswear line, but I’m not sure how I feel about homefries here being the focus of the campaign and current toast of the fashion world: dude clearly blew his student loans on tattoos, and, in the words of Woody Allen, “You can tell a lot [...]
A cool little behind-the-scenes video with the wardrobe designers for Black Swan – I’m still ambivalent about the movie as a whole, but there’s no denying that the costumes (courtesy of Rodarte) are breathtaking. -christina
via HypeBeast: “…a look into the trailer for “Women Are Heroes”, a new film from multi-faceted French creative JR, hands down one of the most prominent street artists of the past year. Following his usual social undertones, the film takes us into the harshest of conditions abroad to learn about the power of women. An [...]
This is so incredibly bitchin’ and a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. Genero.tv is hosting contest for the official music videos for David Lynch’s “I Know” and “Good Day Today.” The submissions are up and they are out of control! Most are homages to his style, but some are truly creative and weird [...]
I’m loving Todd Selby’s recent forays into short film, especially this portrait of leather dealer Mitch Alfus; the juxtaposition of scenes of him being a doting father, then going to work and being a hardass, cigar smoking boss-man is…dare I say it…touching?
This makes me really nostalgic for arcades and the innocent young days when having a few quarters opened up your whole afternoon for games and candy-hunting. The dots on this video are all quarters. And these people have too much time on their hands. I hope they used a MacArthur grant for this. -christina
One of a series of talks with artists at this years Art Basel Miami, Baldessari sets aside his usual sharpness and answers the question “what makes you feel alive?” with the pleasant, easy-going attitude he’s known for. Take a moment to read the intro on Nowness, it references Baldessari’s involvement the long-overdue art initiative Pacific [...]
The videos from this year’s TWS Skate & Create competition are up. The Adidas team (featuring the near-and-dear to my heart Mark Gonzales) totally crushed with their arty light and color concept, but I have to give it to Director Ty Evans and Lakai for making a video in the beautiful, epic vein of Fully [...]
We may be tired of the Simpsons, which is too bad, because the latest episodes are some of the best I’ve ever seen, and not just for the next-level opening sequences – recently a Ke$ha homage and now one directed/storyboarded by Banksy. Funny and depressing, in true Simpson form…
Was Fantasia boring and/or scary to you when you were little? It should have. Shit is gorgeous and bananas. via Kasia Bobula: “Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ is a set of eight animated segments that are accompanied by classical tracks from composers such as Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and Bach… It’s kind of hard to believe that a film so [...]
3+1 is an art and photography exhibit that opened at agnes b’s Galerie du Jour in Paris earlier this month; featuring works from the late Dash Snow, Harmony Korine and Ryan McGinley. Slamxhype posted a couple of great videos from the opening. The first is an interview with curator Agnes B herself, and the second [...]
Hey, they made a doc about Helvetica – so don’t be surprised that there are many people out there obsessed with Tweed (count me among them). Michael Williams over at ACL did a great post on his favorite fabric, and included this little gem: go to his post to watch parts 2 and 3
From AnotherMag.com: “Created by AnOther Magazine with artist and filmmaker Baillie Walsh, KM3D-1 stars Kate Moss. The work continues Moss and Walsh’s journey into experimental, multi-dimensional image-making, first seen in their legendary holographic film for Alexander McQueen’s autumn/winter 2006 show. With a performance that recalls the fantastical cinema of Ray Harryhausen, James Bidgood and Kenneth [...]

IdeaCity calls itself “an eclectic gathering of artists, adventurers, authors, cosmologists, doctors, designers, entertainers, filmmakers, inventors, magicians, musicians, scientists and technologists.” It’s like the TED Talks for pop culture – only the influential are invited to attend, and the most influential are invited to speak. Tavi talks about what an ideal teen fashion magazine would [...]
For his latest film controversial French director Gaspar Noé mixes themes of sex, drugs, childhood, death, and reincarnation with seizure-inducing visuals and ultimately life-affirming message. Early reviews are calling it unwatchable, which means you should really watch it. The film debuted at Sundance and will hopefully have even limited theatrical release this year.
They did it. Someone actually made sneaker porn.
Hats off to Mitra and everyone else who’s been sharing this video. I saw Anger give a talk at the Hammer Museum last year where he just rambled about the Jonas Brothers for an hour, and I remember thinking “Welp, he’s done. That’s too bad.” It’s a delight to be proven wrong by his latest [...]
“Full Bleed, the photo book chronicling NYC skate culture, is the feature of the latest Epicly Later’d episode. Listen to the likes of Alex Corporan, Ivory Serra, Andre Razo, Patrick O’Dell, and Peter Bici talk about the book, as well as the development of the skate scene in New York over the last 30+ Years.” [...]
