U.K. artist HUSH will make his return to Los Angeles this weekend with a solo exhibition comprised of brand new work for Corey Helford Gallery. The paintings bring together screenprinted patterns and graffiti writing, layered over depictions of the female form. Opening the same night is artist Michael Mararian, at CHG Circa, just doors from Corey Helford’s main space.

WHAT ARE YOU REALLY INTO RIGHT NOW?  Biking. I biked last weekend from Venice to Manhattan Beach. It makes you feel like you are twelve years old again, not a care in the world. Plus I am in the midst of working on my summer playlist which includes Lorde, Misun, Junip and Jake Bugg. Bikes +  Music, into it.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR WORK?  Balance. Sometimes it can suck you dry creatively, emotionally, and I think I’ve always struggled with factoring myself into the equation. I’ve learned if you take care of yourself, the work will fall into place.

ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET IN THE GAME?  Trust your gut. I like the “work hard and be nice to people” stuff but the reality is you have to watch your back, stand up for yourself, steer clear of greed/jealousy/bad people (or people who give you a bad feeling) and ask for what you want—no regrets.

OLDEST THING IN YOUR CLOSET? An amazing belt I got at Goodwill back in my thrifting days. It was made in 1953 and has the name Greta carved into the leather. Thanks Greta!

FIRST CONCERT? No Doubt. UGH. The bindi. So good.

WHAT WOULD YOU BUY WITH 5 BUCKS AT 7-11? Have you had their pizza? It’s magical.

DO YOU DREAM MOST ASLEEP OR AWAKE? Asleep. Mostly about work. I get some of my best ideas while taking a snooze.

CURRENT FAVORITE BITNB TEE(S)? The bears & butterflies tee! (see above)

WHAT’S NEXT? Portland! We just opened an office there and I am going to be up there a lot this summer working on Create + Cultivate (happening July 27th!).

“Selfish” at Katherine Cone Gallery, curated by artist Sean Cheetham, brings together an impressive lineup of contemporary painters who have all contributed a self-portrait to the exhibition.

From the gallery:
“Intrinsically linked to identity, the self-portrait ultimately stands to reveal something deeper about the creator- an exploration of self and an examination of one’s own conscious thoughts and feelings. At times, an artist feels they must repeatedly create a self-portrait in an effort to further research their inner-self and perhaps search for answers within the painted image. Famous painters from Rembrandt to van Gogh have relied on self-portraiture as a method to intensely study the self through art.”
